    The Counselling Approach

    Person Centred

The core counselling approach used in All Ears is a person-centred approach. This mode of counselling was developed by Carl Rogers in the 1970s. This approach means that the counsellor works with clients to explore issues raised by the client in an empathic, confidential, non-judgemental safe environment.

Research shows that the key to successful counselling is the therapeutic relationship built between the client and the counsellor. This is considered a priority at All Ears to enable clients to feel safe to open up. The counsellor does not give advice but will work with the client to find the answers within themselves.

Although person centred is the main approach, counsellors will work with clients with an integrative approach, using other techniques (such as hypnotherapy/CBT etc) and theories if they would be helpful to the client during the therapeutic process. Counsellors work towards clients goals to help them move forward positively in their lives.

    Meet the team

    Janet Jarvis (JJ)

I am a qualified nurse, counsellor and hypnotherapist.  I have worked as a nurse in the NHS for nearly 30 years and I have been working in psychotherapy since 2017. I am a member of the Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC) and I work to their ethical framework.  I am also an Associate Professor (Hons) at the University of Leicester.

My experience in counselling is with adults and teenagers who are experiencing concerns such as anxiety, depression, bereavement, trauma, abuse and relationship difficulties.  I have a particular interest in working with teenagers and those people living with a long term health condition such as Diabetes.

Although I am trained in person centred counselling, I use an integrative approach by using other tools, resources and theories from other modes of counselling when working with clients. I offer appointments face to face, online or via the telephone.  I am also trained in walk and talk counselling therapy if this is something you are interested in.

I have seen how working with the right counsellor can help a person become increasingly self-aware and find the skills/resources they have within themselves to move forward positively in their life.

    Meet the team: Woodward (Woody)

Meet Woody – Our Therapy Dog

Woody is our friendly cockapoo and a fully trained well-being emotional support dog. He was trained by Wellbeing Dogs in Leicester, specialists in emotional support training.

Woody loves helping clients feel comfortable and confident. He can:

    • Play and engage with younger clients to encourage conversation.
    • Sit quietly for cuddles and strokes when comfort is needed.
    • Respond sensitively to emotions, offering love and compassion.

Woody is available to join your sessions if animal-assisted therapy is something that helps you talk and open up.

    How Woody Can Help You?

The presence of a dog in the counselling room offers a range of benefits that make therapy more effective and comfortable. Dogs naturally provide emotional support and create a calming atmosphere, helping clients feel safe and relaxed.

    Key Benefits:

    • Reduces Anxiety and Stress: Interacting with a friendly, non-judgemental dog triggers oxytocin – the “feel-good” hormone – promoting trust and relaxation.
    • Enhances Emotional Insight: Dogs are keen observers of human emotions. Their reactions can help therapists understand a client’s emotional state and encourage confidence.
    • Comfort Through Touch: Petting or cuddling a dog releases endorphins, boosting mood and making it easier to open up.
    • Builds Trust and Safety: For those with trauma or trust issues, a dog’s unconditional love creates a secure environment for healing.
    • Improves Communication: Talking about the dog can break the ice, leading to more natural and productive conversations.

    Ready to Experience the Benefits?

If you’d like Woody to join your counselling session, simply let us know when booking. Animal-assisted therapy can make a real difference in creating a safe, supportive space for healing and growth.
